About Me
I was born November 22, 1988, in Nashua, New Hampshire. Since then I have lived in six states. In May 2007 I graduated top in my class from Troup High School in LaGrange, GA, at whihc point I enrolled in Georgia Tech. In December 2011 I graduated from Tech with a bachelor’s degree in Discrete Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science. Presently, I am working for Raybeam Solutions from California (7th state!), with plans to move to Massachusetts (8th!) in July.
Interests
My academic interests include mostly Mathematics and Computer Science, which I discuss in more detail on my Academics page, and Linguistics, both from a cognitive and an anthropological perspective. I’m particularly interested in the areas in which these all overlap: formal languages and natural language modeling.
I’ve also dabbled in design, especially print design and typography. You can read more about the design of this site in the Colophon.
Activities
While enrolled at Tech, I was heavily involved in both my fraternity, Psi Upsilon, and with DramaTech Theater, Georgia Tech’s student-run theater group. You can find more details about my involvement in these two organizations by visiting my PsiU and Theater pages, respectively.
My Favorite …
Games
I’m a tremendous board and card game nerd. Some of my favorites include Small World, Carcassonne, Thunderstone, Fluxx, and Forbidden Island, though I’ll play just about any board or card game. You can see my collection on my games page. I’m also an avid Magic: The Gathering player. You can see some of my decks on my Deckbox profile page.
In terms of video games, I tend to enjoy either very simple puzzle and/or platform games, or games which showcase the ability of the medium to tell a compelling story. Some of my favorites are Psychonauts (PC), Bastion (PC), Bumpy Road (iOS), Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3), and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii).
Books
No list of my favorite books would be complete without Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter, which actually changed the way I look at the world. Other nonfiction books I’d list among my favorites are Logicomix by Apostolos Doxiadis and Christos Papadimitriou, The Code Book by Simon Singh, Prime Obsession by John Derbyshire, and Introduction to the Theory of Computation by Michael Sipser.
As for fiction, I’ve been working my way through A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, and I greatly enjoyed Sandman by Neil Gaiman, Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, most of the H. P. Lovecraft I’ve read (especially “The Shadow out of Time”), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, and a good bit of Shakespeare (especially Macbeth).
Movies
Some of my favorite movies include Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, the Wachowski Brothers’ V for Vendetta, Charlie Kaufman’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman films and Inception.
Music
I listen to a wide variety of music, mostly through Pandora and Spotify. My most frequented Pandora stations are my Great Big Sea station (sea shanties and folk music), my They Might Be Giants station (’90s), and my rock station based on Pandora’s builtin classic rock workout station.
Television Shows
I’m currently following Legend of Korra (the successor to Avatar: The Last Airbender), HBO’s Game of Thrones, and CBS’s How I Met Your Mother. Other shows I enjoy include Community, Parks and Recreation, Dead Like Me, Better Off Ted, Archer, Jeopardy!, and Good Eats.
